Whale Sharks of Mexico

I spent a week on Isla Majures, off Cancum, Mexico, on a trip organised by https://www.aqua-firma.com/ and lead by marine biologist Simon Pierce, founder of https://marinemegafauna.org/, and local Whale Shark researcher Rafael de la Parra https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Rafael-De-La-Parra. We snorkeled with Whale Sharks, the largest fish in the sea; some were about 10 metres in length. It was an incredible experience to be close up with such an extraordinary large creatures. I visited in July 2016.

According to the books, whale sharks are solitary creatures, but off Cancum they congregate in fantastic numbers feeding on Tuna spawn. There were about 400 whale Sharks around our boat on one day. They were not at all interested in our presence so close to them; they just continued feeding with their mouths wide open filtering the Tuna spawn from the water.
